Jawed Alam Khan is a trained economist with a PhD in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. He is currently the Executive Director at the Institute of Policy Studies and Advocacy, New Delhi. He is also associated with IMPRI as a Senior Visiting Fellow and has previously worked with the Institute of Social Sciences, Centre for Budget and Governance Accountability, and Hamdard University.
His work primarily focuses on development economics, public policy and finance, fiscal decentralization to local governments, fund utilization in social sector programmes, implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the responsiveness of budgets to disadvantaged groups such as persons with disabilities, women, children, bonded labourers, minorities, Dalits, and Adivasis.
With over 20 years of experience in research, teaching, and training, he has authored more than 25 research reports, papers, policy briefs, and training manuals in his areas of interest. He has conducted numerous training sessions on public policy, budget analysis, and local government budgeting at premier institutions such as LBSNAA (Mussoorie), IIPA (New Delhi), ASCI (Hyderabad), KILA (Thrissur), and NIPCCD (New Delhi). He has also led training workshops for students at institutions such as ST College Ernakulam, TISS (Tuljapur and Hyderabad), Jamia Millia Islamia, and JNU, as well as for national and international NGOs, UN agencies, and Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs).
Jawed has been actively involved with people’s movements and social networks, including the National Alliance of People’s Movements, Kisan Mazdoor Shakti Sangathan, Bebak Collective of Women Groups, Wada Na Todo Abhiyan, National Campaign for Dalit Human Rights (NACDOR), Feminist Policy Collectives, International Justice Mission, and World Vision. His contributions include training support in budget analysis, budget advocacy, and enhancing access to entitlements in government schemes for marginalized communities.
He has also participated in UNESCAP consultations on financing for the implementation of SDGs and the Social and Economic Survey. As part of the United Nations consultation process on financing the post-2015 Sustainable Development Agenda, he has represented India in meetings and conferences across countries including Japan, China, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa.
